THE gaping hole in the road where the Straid Bridge has stood for some 200 years looked like the crater left by a 'shock and awe' missile.
It is testament to the power of nature which struck with a vengeance at this rural crossing on Saturday afternoon.

A jagged hole some 10 feet in diameter is all that is left of the roadway. The side wall of the Bridge is gone leaving only a thin arch of stone across the burn which normally babbles happily into the nearby River Maine.

Local resident Samuel Sloan viewed the wreckage of the bridge with some amazement.

"To do that took some weight of water," he said. "That wee bridge has been there for maybe a couple of hundred years but the water just swept it away."

The bridge collapsed, it is understood, at around 6pm on Saturday. If anyone had been on the roadway at the time, the results could well have been fatal.
