RESIDENTS in Ballymena area are being urged to be on their guard following a report of a bogus caller who claimed to be erecting fencing called at a house in the Moat Road area of the town sometime between 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm on Thursday October 2.
The man persuaded the householder to allow him to go through the house to the rear garden as there was no other means of access to the rear of the building to examine the site.

It wasn't until after the man had left that the householder discovered that two bedrooms had been ransacked and a sum in cash was missing.

Detectives investigating the incident are eager to hear from anyone who can help to identify the culprit who spoke with an English accent. He is described as approximately 35 years old, 5' 7" tall, of slim build with short dark hair, wearing dark clothing.

Anyone who noticed the man or an accomplice either walking or driving through the estate or anyone who received a similar visit is asked to contact the police at Ballymena. The telephone number to ring is 0845 600 8000, or contact the 'Crimestoppers' charity on freephone 0800 555111.

POLICE WARNING

The police in H District have reiterated their warning to householders not to be tricked by criminals who engage in distraction burglaries.
Bogus callers can appear very plausible and can be very persuasive.

It is important to recognise this, and important that people become more suspicious of everyone who calls at their door. Don't drop your guard and never accept anything at face value.

The scams employed can vary, but all are designed to bring about a particular reaction that will leave you vulnerable to theft. Don't be rushed into making a decision. You need to take a few minutes to fully understand what is happening.

Ask for and thoroughly check the person's identification, and let the caller stand on the doorstep while you establish if they are genuine or bogus. This will also allow you to ask a relative or neighbour to be present if you are unsure of what to do.

If no identification is produced then the caller should always be refused access. If you believe the caller is bogus take a note of their description and contact the police immediately on 0845 600 8000 or in an emergency always dial '999'.
